ISBN: 9780735211179
Published: Riverhead Books - August 29th, 2017

The bond between Father and Daughter is a strong one....especially if the mother is no longer in the picture.  But can it be TOO STRONG!

This novel centers around a 14 year old girl who is very strong willed and minded, she is very adept in hunting, fishing, and living off the earth!  Her father is very controlling and limits all of Turtles friendships and social activities.

Turtle's relationship with her father is not a healthy one...as you learn right away from chapter one!  But what makes Turtle so loyal and loving to him??  And why won't he let her out of her bubble which she lives in squalor....and make friendships and possibly feel the initial feelings of a first love with some boys in an adjacent community!

The more courage that Turtle gives to free herself and make her, her own person....the more this novel becomes a Horror Story, up until the emotionally climatic ending!!

This 400 page book does a great job of giving you half the story of Turtle and her Father's relationship and then focus the other half of the book on Turtle trying to make something of herself on her own!  It was an emotionally tight book, sometimes very hurtful to read with a HUGE Climax to end!  But throughout the whole book you are always in the "cheering seat" for Turtle!!

The city has changed though, through Lillian's success and heartbreak.  How staying relevant in society...sometimes is hard to hold onto, as new business models and business practices overshadow your days when you were behind the desk!

"This historical Fiction novel, set in Ireland revolves around a Florence Nightingale/trained nurse to look over an 11 year old child who hasn't eaten in four months and says she is being fed by her faith in God alone. Themes revolve around religion (Irish Catholic) and the church, media influences, superstitions, and doing what you feel is right to set someone you love free. Is this a well-planned hoax or are there hidden secrets within a family that would drive a child to do this to herself? Emma Donoghue, the author of Room, now brings you inside the walls of another small abode in the farm-country of Ireland!"
