A group of friends, give support, feel lose and fight for the hope that this will all end soon.
At the height of the AIDS epidemic in Chicago...in the 80’s...
A novel written with compassion + much much HEART!
A funny, tender, heart-warming story about: ex-wives, ex-husbands, ex-friends...that all lead us back to an ex-LIFE! Stephen McCauley has a skillful way with telling a story of 2 people, that have grown apart at a time in life, but always hold deep in themselves a true connection! You’ll fall in love with all his characters and all their faults!
The bond between Father and Daughter is a strong one....especially if the mother is no longer in the picture. But can it be TOO STRONG!
This novel centers around a 14 year old girl who is very strong willed and minded, she is very adept in hunting, fishing, and living off the earth! Her father is very controlling and limits all of Turtles friendships and social activities.
Turtle's relationship with her father is not a healthy one...as you learn right away from chapter one! But what makes Turtle so loyal and loving to him?? And why won't he let her out of her bubble which she lives in squalor....and make friendships and possibly feel the initial feelings of a first love with some boys in an adjacent community!
The more courage that Turtle gives to free herself and make her, her own person....the more this novel becomes a Horror Story, up until the emotionally climatic ending!!
This 400 page book does a great job of giving you half the story of Turtle and her Father's relationship and then focus the other half of the book on Turtle trying to make something of herself on her own! It was an emotionally tight book, sometimes very hurtful to read with a HUGE Climax to end! But throughout the whole book you are always in the "cheering seat" for Turtle!!
WOW I didn't know a 168 page book could....PACK A MAJOR PUNCH to your GUT!!
A bitter divorce .... a custody battle .... and now 2 boys are living with Dad!
A 12 year old and his older brother watch as their Dad slowly spirals down from drug abuse and addiction and the boys are subject to his mental and physical tirades.
There's something about "BEING ONE OF THE BOYS" when your Dad asks you....that makes feel like family, and in a special club...and that makes you forgive.........
This book is based on the real woman who was the highest paid advertising exec at R.H. MACY's in the 1930's...
Take a 10 mile walk with Lillian in NYC on the last day of 1984, New Year's Eve...as she recounts her days at Macy's, her marriage, her family and her young professional life living in NYC! And now on route on NYE...she stumbles into many NYC characters. I loved this book and learned so much about successful "women in a career" in the 30's.
The city has changed though, through Lillian's success and heartbreak. How staying relevant in society...sometimes is hard to hold onto, as new business models and business practices overshadow your days when you were behind the desk!
3 people who all have LOST someone...but LOVE DEEPLY....
It's their journey to fill that "love-hole" in their life!
An 8 year old sensitive, coming of age Albino (Edgar), who is world's ahead of himself is loved immensely by his Grandmother....Until he loses her and his free-spirited, excessive mother (Lucy), needs to step to the plate. Can she...?? That is where the journey begins...
This Epic story stirred up so many feelings as I read it....from growing up "different" and trying to fit in...to being the best parent that you can possibly be. The characters are so believable, you don't want to let them go!
Cat Marnell is the Female Augustin Boroughs....the drunken, drugged-out life from Augustin's NY advertising exec days to Cat's NY Fashion Magazine Beauty Editor...DAZE!
Cat is my new best friend! Or so I feel after reading her Memoir "How To Murder Your Life"! She is so brutally honest in her writing you cannot judge her negatively with all her demons but you feel a compassion for her and all the drama that she is going through. She makes you feel like you are the only one in the room where Cat is talking to you one-on-one!!
Addiction SUCKS! Cat, in her writing is very straight forward, doesn't mince words or scenes and it can get very uncomfortable reading about it....but she has a great sense of humor and humanity that makes her story very special and engaging.
I loved the ending, where she admits that she is still "NOT CLEAN"....but is dealing with a lot LESS Addictions that were haunting her! It's this honesty that makes this book a great read!!
2 Women's LOVE that is wrapped around one precious Child!
Very timely in today's political landscape! Soli - illegally enters the U.S. From Mexico to find the "American Dream".
One woman has a child, the other is desperately trying to have one and this is how their worlds collide!
2 women who only want the BEST for this child, this is the story!
This book is full of Love & Heartbreak - of Struggle & Fear!
You also get insight on how the Undocumented are treated and how Deportation works in the U.S.
Great Characters and a Wonderful & Emotionally Challenging Story!
"This historical Fiction novel, set in Ireland revolves around a Florence Nightingale/trained nurse to look over an 11 year old child who hasn't eaten in four months and says she is being fed by her faith in God alone. Themes revolve around religion (Irish Catholic) and the church, media influences, superstitions, and doing what you feel is right to set someone you love free. Is this a well-planned hoax or are there hidden secrets within a family that would drive a child to do this to herself? Emma Donoghue, the author of Room, now brings you inside the walls of another small abode in the farm-country of Ireland!"
Yes, the book deals with a Charles Manson-like cult group and leader set in the Bay Area in 1969...
The books main focus however, is a story of a girl's coming of age! Parents and family, social classes, choosing your friends and losing your innocence!
